McCall's novel in verse, titled Under the Mesquite, is a wonderful story about a girl who immigrates from Mexico with her family. As she adjusts to her new life in an unfamiliar country, Lupita's family is struck by tragedy. Her beloved mother is diagnosed with cancer. As the oldest child, Lupita feels the need to rise up, looking after her family and hiding the emotional turmoil within her.
From feeling angry at Lupita's loudmouth friend, to crying at the pain her family feels, this book is sure to take you on a journey! McCall does a wonderful job of portraying her emotions throughout her ordeals.
