The story was about two cancer survivors who meet at a support group and fell in love. Throughout the book the main characters, Hazel Grace and Augustus Waters, spend a lot of time with each other. They ran into many problems since both are cancer survivors. One problem in particular that has nothing to do with the cancer is the fact that they both want to know what happens to the characters at the end of An Imperial Affliction by Van Houten. Later, they used Augustus Waters only Wish that all cancer victims get to go to see Van Houten in Amsterdam. Once there they encountered another problem. After finding out the true nature of the author that created the book that they both love, they decided Van Houten was not worth their time.
My favorite characters are Hazel and Gus. I like that they are comfortable with each other. Their relationship is amazing and it is fun to watch them both talk to each other. They make me laugh so much especially in the part where they arrange a pre-funeral. I know I wasn’t supposed to laugh given the situation but the way that they gave the eulogy was funny.
I can relate to Hazel and Gus in the fact that we love to read. I understand why they both think about what will happen after they die because I also have the same thoughts to and their view of the world is similar to mine.
I love the book. I didn’t think I would love it this much since the situation is real. I thought it was going to be one of those lame realistic books when a friend told me about it last year so I didn’t bother with it, although, I’m glad that I was able to read it for the Book Club. My favorite part is when Hazel and Gus are together which is more than half of the book. I won’t say my least favorite part because I don’t want to spoil the book but if I were to change anything in the book it would be if they both died and were buried together. I think that would have been romantic but that is just me.
I would recommend this book to anybody who would like to get a laugh, cry, or just wants to read a well written book.
