In the 1700s sick people where smeared with crushed poisonous beetles. They would create blood blisters all over the place in which they were applied .Doctors thought that busting these blisters would take out all the “bad blood” out of a person who was sick.
When George Washington got a throat infection he was treated with this. Since he wouldn’t get better they slapped more beetle jam on him and drained him a few more times. Washington wasn’t breathing so well at that point he was struggling to breathe. The doctors also gave him mercurous chloride a substance that makes you go to the bathroom excessively. And to make matters even worse they gave him tartar emetic which is a substance that makes u throw up a lot. So poor George Washington was doing his human necessities over and over again and ended up dead.
He died of epiglottitis, an infection on the flap of skin at the back of the tongue which is in charge of protecting the wind pipe. He would have survived if he would have been given a dose of corticosteroids, epinephrine, and Bactrim or Septra- simple antibiotics. But no they chose to bleed him and took out about 80 oz. of blood from our dear first president.
