My favorite passage from the book“How They Croaked” by Georgia Bragg is the passage about Edgar Allen Poe. It is interesting to know that everyone who ever cared for Poe has died from tuberculosis. It makes you wonder if it is caused by Poe himself or if he was just at the right place at the wrong time. Or perhaps it was just caused by the high death rate at the time from this disease. At the time, a lot of people surrounded themselves with diseases and bad hygiene so it is no surprise that
people would die from any diseases. However, what was surprising to read is that Poe was present at the time of all his loved ones unfortunate deaths from this disease.
At first the doctors didn’t know the cause of his death but later doctors believed that it probably was caused by rabies since all the symptoms were there. Nobody knew how to cure rabies since they hadn’t found a cure for it until much later. However, modern medicine and technology could have saved Poe’s life. A rabies immune globulin and five doses of the rabies vaccine over a 28-day period immediately after exposure would have saved Poe.
