The story was about a girl named Alexis Garza, who falls for a mariachi boy named Christian Luna like love at first sight. She ends up bringing a group of “troublemakers’ together to help her win his heart and succeeds, but when an extremely strict mother is in the picture, you know something is bound to happen. After some mariachi uniforms get stolen, money was needed for replacements and Alexis’ cousin, Santiago had won illegal drag races before. This event brings problems for Alexis and Christian, who go to support Santiago. It’s a journey they get through.
Alexis is the most relatable character in the book especially when it comes to the way she felt about seeing her new mariachi members who all looked up to no go. It’s like getting group members in school projects that you know will have you doing all the work. She had no confidence at first especially because she wanted to get famous and see her new crush. I have to give Alexis credit for being so brave in something about ninety-nine percent of women wouldn’t do: sing to win over your crush’s heart. Alexis is just a normal, simple girl like me and she has big dreams that most people could relate to.
At first, I didn’t think I’d like the book too much because of the lack of adventurous fiction that I really enjoy, but I got to say, I liked reading Alexis’ journey. It was simple and my favorite part had to be the first time she met Christian Luna, because the way they instantly connected was too cute and it actually made me a bit sad that she might not see him again. My least favorite part was on the bus to their first competition with the huge bird, because it didn’t seem to add up to me. I would’ve probably changed that part about the book if I could, but it was still a great book. The new mariachi band members were all unique in their own way, and I admire Karina the most, especially when she was in her “stalking” mode after Christian for Alexis. It was a great thing to do for a friend.
I’d recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading the complicated life of a simple girl who falls “head over heels” for a boy. It’s a cute story that’s not too long and I bet most girls would enjoy this little journey of love.
