The story is about the life of Alessandra Cecchi, the young daughter of a rich cloth merchant. As a child of the Renaissance, she shows intelligence and a talent for drawing. When a young artist is brought home to work for the family, she gets amazed by his abilities.
The arrangement of a marriage to an old aristocrat, the transformation of Florence from a city of art to a city of God, and the shifting of religious and political power, causes their relationship to be disturbed. Between the luxury and dazzling art, and the hellfire preaching of a
violent friar, Alessandra must find herself and what it means to pursue freedom and passion.
I recommend this book to anyone! I was completely entrapped within the walls of Florence. Durant paints a beautiful picture with words. Alessandra is an amazingly well built character, and the rest of the cast are well made. The history ties in so fluidly with the story, it just adds more to the meticulous detail in it. Also, the other ideas give good feedback on how life was like back then in Florence. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.
